Consumer drones are very powerful

Consumer drones that can be bought in the shop and put into operation immediately are called Ready to Fly, RTF for short. Today’s most popular RTF drone, the DJI Phantom, can be operated legally and without a permit. The permissible radius of action is limited to about 300m from the pilot due to the visual flight requirement. The maximum permitted altitude is 100m from the ground. With a dead weight of just over 2 kg, the Phantom carries a payload of 500 g, e.g. a high-resolution camera. With the Phantom, however, first-person-view flights are already possible today that reach a distance of 5 km from the pilot. The drone is controlled via a screen, ie the pilot navigates using the on-board camera. If the drone is programmed for a coordinate flight, it can fly to targets independently of the pilot using GPS. At a flight speed of 50 km / h and a maximum flight time of 20 minutes, the Phantom can reach targets independently and without a pilot within a radius of 15 km or at altitudes of 6,000 meters above sea level. The technologies that enable these services were only available to the military until a few years ago. You can buy the DJI Phantom today for CHF 1,000 in electronics stores. The DJI Phantom is by far not the most powerful freely available drone. Current products have payloads of up to 10kg, flight speeds over 100 km / h and ranges of up to 50 km.

The most popular drone DJI Phantom can already fly to targets within a radius of 15 km with pinpoint accuracy. It reaches altitudes of 6,000 meters above sea level. and a speed of 50km / h. It carries a payload of 500g.

Legal framework

In Switzerland today, drones weighing up to 30kg can be freely purchased and operated. They have to be flown by a pilot on sight, so in practice the distance from the pilot must not exceed 300m to 500m. The legally prescribed maximum flight altitude is 100m from the ground. Drones must keep a minimum distance of 5 km from airports and airfields. A distance of 100m must be kept to crowds of more than 24 people. In addition, certain no-fly zones are designated at military installations and other locations. Personal rights and data protection must be observed when taking photos and films. What danger does a drone pose?

Drones represent risks such as smuggling, espionage, attacks or sabotage:

How can you protect yourself against drones?

The first step is to detect the drone. Conventional electronic measures such as motion detectors, cameras and vibration sensors detect drones only to a limited extent or not at all. Radar, laser and thermal imaging are very susceptible to false alarms from birds and other objects and are not practical.
